According to a study published in the journal Biology Letters, a female American crocodile kept in isolation in a zoo in Costa Rica deposited an egg that developed into a stillborn, parthenogenic crocodile. This is the first instance of facultative parthenogenesis or a “virgin birth” in a crocodile. The results, according to researchers, shed light on how crocodile predecessors, such as dinosaurs and pterosaurs, reproduced.
